Ascochyta warning

New South Wales Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) senior plant pathologist Dr Kevin Moore says current forecasts for above average winter rain and neutral to La Niña conditions in spring, plus evidence that the ascochyta blight fungus is changing and concerns about varietal purity, justify a conservative approach to ascochyta management this season.

Sowing larger seeded faba bean such as PBA Nasma

The variety PBA Nasma has significantly larger seed than previous varieties released for northern NSW, which will improve market acceptance. In trials, PBA Nasma has demonstrated higher yield than older varieties and acceptable disease resistance, as a result it is likely to be widely adopted in the north.

Unfortunately many growers have recently been disappointed to learn that their order was cancelled due to the low germination rates in the bulk of the seed stock. Rain before harvest is the cause of the unacceptable germination rates in affected seed, principally sourced from the Moora district.
